Board of Directors
Jason has served as a member of our Board of Directors since September 2013. He has been a Managing Director of Sumeru Equity Partners, a private equity firm, since March 2014. Since July 2011, Jason has been a Principal for Silver Lake Sumeru, a middle-market investment group of Silver Lake, a global private equity firm and one of BlackLine’s investors. From August 2008 to July 2011, Jason was with Symphony Technology Group, a private equity firm and from July 2004 to August 2006, served as a Senior Manager for Life Technologies, a biotech company. From February 2001 to March 2004, Jason was Director of Engineering for Angstron Systems, a nano-deposition technology company, acquired by Novellus. Prior to that, he was a Venture Capital Associate for The Spark Group, a technology-focused investment group. Jason holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, an M.S. in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley.
John has served as a member of our Board of Directors since September 2013. He cofounded private equity firm Sumeru Equity Partners, where he has served as Managing Director since March 2014. Since February 2008, John has been a Managing Director for Silver Lake Sumeru, a middle-market investment group of Silver Lake, a global private equity firm and one of BlackLine’s investors. From June 2003 to February 2008, John served as Senior Vice President of Platform Software for Adobe Systems. He previously held roles as Senior Vice President of SMB Segment Operations for Hewlett Packard Company (NYSE: HP) and Principal and Associate Partner of Electronics and High-Tech Practice for Accenture Strategic Services. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors for ForeFlight, LLC, Influence Health, Inc. (formerly Medseek), Talend (Nasdaq:TLND), and Digital Reasoning Systems, Inc. He holds an M.B.A. from University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business and a B.A. in History from Yale University.
Marc is a cloud accounting software industry veteran with an exceptional record leading sales and operational teams and driving growth at successful software companies. He joined BlackLine in early 2018 as Chief Operating Officer and was named President in February 2020, leading the company’s worldwide sales, marketing, technology and all customer-facing organizations. With the promotion to CEO in early 2021, he assumed responsibility for the company’s people, legal, facilities and finance and accounting teams, as well. Since he joined, BlackLine has scaled its sales and customer success teams, strategically repositioned its go-to-market plan, completed a global reseller agreement with SAP, established a subsidiary in Japan, and entered into a number of strategic alliances with the world’s leading consulting and advisory firms.
Marc came to BlackLine from global cloud ERP and accounting software leader NetSuite where he served as President of Worldwide Sales and Distribution. During his 14-year tenure, NetSuite grew from $3 million to $1 billion in annual revenue and became recognized as a global powerhouse.
Owen has served as a member of our Board of Directors since August 2018. He has worked as the Chief Strategy Officer of Geller & Company, a strategic financial advisory and wealth management company, since 2018. From 2016 to 2017, Owen served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of AEGIS Insurance, a mutual insurance company. Prior to joining AEGIS Insurance, Owen was Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte Advisory, a financial advisory company, from 2008 until 2016. Owen holds a B.S. from New Jersey City University and an M.B.A. from Columbia University, and is a certified public accountant.
Graham has served as a member of our Board of Directors since May 2015. From 2007 to 2015, he held various senior financial roles with Salesforce, Inc., including Executive Vice President, EVP of Finance, EVP and Chief Financial Officer and EVP and Chief Financial Officer Designate. Prior to joining Salesforce, Graham spent four years as Chief Financial Officer of Advent Software. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors for Splunk (Nasdaq: SPLK), a provider of operational intelligence software, and Xero, a provider of online accounting software. Graham holds a B.Sc. in Economics and Politics from University of Bristol in England and is qualified as a chartered accountant in England & Wales.
Kevin became a member of our Board of Directors in October 2017. He has been President and Chief Executive Officer of SolarWinds since 2010, having also served as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer since 2006, and Chief Operating Officer since 2007. Prior to joining SolarWinds, Mr. Thompson was Chief Financial Officer of Surgient, Inc., a software company, from November 2005 until March 2006 and was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at SAS Institute, a business intelligence software company, from September 2004 until November 2005. From October 2000 until August 2004, Mr. Thompson served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), an enterprise software company. Earlier in his career, Kevin was a Partner at global accounting and tax advisory firm PwC and a Senior Manager at Arthur Andersen. Kevin serves on the Boards of Solarwinds and Instructure (NYSE: INST). He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma.
Therese founded BlackLine in 2001. She designed the first offerings of BlackLine’s products, engineered its transition to the cloud in 2007, and has led the organization in automating the financial close process via the company’s flagship Finance Controls and Automation Platform. Under her direction, BlackLine has experienced strong growth since its inception.
Previously, Therese served as Chief Technology Officer for SunGard Treasury Systems. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Illinois.
Tom has served as a member of our Board of Directors since 2010. Mr. Unterman formed Rustic Canyon Partners, a venture capital firm, in 1999 and continues to be a partner, serving on boards of directors of several of the firm’s portfolio companies. From August 1992 to December 1999, Tom was an executive of The Times Mirror Company, with his last position being Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer. He is currently a director of several non-profit organizations; UCLA Technology Development Corp, The Los Angeles Mayor’s Fund, The Youth Policy Institute and three national civil rights organizations. He holds a J.D. from the University of Chicago and a B.A. from Princeton University.
Sophia has served as a member of BlackLine’s Board since March 2020. A widely recognized technology industry leader and artificial intelligence expert, Sophia is currently the Chief Technology Officer for Operation Applications at Microsoft. Since 2018, she has concurrently served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council. Before Microsoft, Sophia served as Doppler Lab’s Chief Product Officer where she defined a new product category and created the world’s first ‘smart’ earbuds, which leveraged machine learning to enhance how people experience sound and ultimately hear better. Prior to Doppler, she headed Google/Nest’s Silicon and Architecture Roadmap team where she scaled the organization from start-up to growth business unit following the Google acquisition. Previously, she was at Apple where she led the Platform Architecture “Think Tank” Program, leveraging AI and machine learning across all of Apple’s advanced technology platforms. Sophia serves on Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering and Create X incubator boards. She holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
Mika has served as a member of our Board of Directors since April 2019. A seasoned, data-driven, go-to-market software veteran, Mika served as Global President at marketing automation software leader Marketo. Prior to Marketo, she was the first to hold the role of Chief Digital Marketing Officer (CDMO) at SAP, where she was responsible for driving growth through digital transformation. She also delivered segment-focused growth as CMO of SAP's small and midsize business unit. Before SAP, Mika launched the first brick-and-mortar Amazon Books store in her role as Head of Marketing and Merchandising at Amazon. She also spent more than six years at Microsoft in a variety of channel and product management roles. The foundation of Mika’s data-driven approach was firmly established during her previous tenure as Research Vice President at Gartner where she analyzed and forecasted trends in the technology market.
